Anaesthetic Gas Monitoring in Operating Theatres

Summary:

Occupational exposure to inhalation of anaesthetic gases should be minimised as it may lead to adverse health effects for the personnel exposed. Many countries pay special attention to workers safety in operating theatres which is leading to increased awareness of recommended exposure levels and measuring methods. One commonly used method of establishing concentration levels in operating theatres is the sampling method followed by analysis in a Mass Spectrometer. However, as both the flow pattern and concentration will vary over time this will introduce measurement errors and the results may not reflect the real situation. This article will describe real time monitoring using Photoacoustic Spectroscopy as an affordable and time saving alternative principle of measurement with minimum maintenance and high measurement quality.

Comparison of Temperature Measurement Methods for Evaluation of the Thermal Environment in Vehicles

Summary:

A new standard, ISO/DIS 14505  [1] is under preparation, dealing with the assessment of the thermal environment in vehicles, based on the equivalent temperature. The scope of this paper is to demonstrate the different results obtained when evaluating the thermal environment inside a vehicle, using the three well known parameters, air temperature, operative temperature and equivalent temperature. The tests were carried out in the winter season during heat-up of the vehicle cabin. Six identical dry heat loss transducers measuring equivalent temperature were placed on a body-shaped aluminium rig to ensure comparable positioning of the transducers during each test. A reference air temperature transducer were placed at head level during all measurements asuring that the individual tests could be compared. Based on the measurement results, the time used to reach the level of thermal comfort  is evaluated and compared.

Measurement of Flow in Automobile Ventilation Systems

Summary:

The measurement of airflow in automobile air-conditioning systems is under normal circumstances a thankless job, with the results obtained rarely measuring up to the effort expended. However, higher quality measurements with less effort can be obtained by changing to the tracer-gas measuring technique which has proved particularly well suited for measurements performed on compact air-conditioning and ventilation systems such as those in automobiles. The following article presents the principles of the tracer-gas measurement method along with the techniques used to determine the different flows of a ventilation system.

Exhaust Gas Monitoring of Fermentation Processes

Summary:

When fermentation is carried out on a batch basis, the proportions of Carbon Dioxide and Oxygen are reliable indicators of the efficiency of the production process and the status of the bioreactor. While traditional instrumentation on fermentors provides data for control loops, thereby ensuring constant conditions, it is not well suited for the analysis of fermentation metabolism. Production staff soon realised that a better indication of Carbon Dioxide and Oxygen could help them determine the respiration rate in the fermentor and thereby increase the efficiency of production.

Considerations in Connection with the Implementation of a Fermentation Monitoring System

Summary:

In the operation of fermentation based processes, it is important to be able to monitor the status of the process in the fermentor. Therefore, standard fermentors are equipped with instrumentation used in control loops, which keep the controllable conditions of the fermentation under constant control; e.g. the flow rates of feed and exhaust gas, the pressure in the fermentor, the PH-level, the dissolved oxygen and the temperature in the broth, and the agiator power input. Since the microbial activity is the most important parameter in the fermentor it is of high value to monitor the parameter.
