Calibration Services

The proliferation of high accuracy, infrared temperature measurement instrumentation and its growing application in critical industries has created the need for qualified primary calibration facilities in addition to the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). To meet the need for fast and cost-effective calibration services, LumaSense has established a fully equipped and expertly staffed laboratory to perform calibration services to national standards on all makes of infrared and optical pyrometric temperature measurement and imaging equipment. Normal calibration time is less than 2 weeks from receipt of the instrument. All LumaSense’s calibration laboratory equipment has been certified by NIST and uses primary standard blackbody sources similar to NIST (freezing point of metal). Calibration procedures and specifications meet NIST standards.

Primary Calibration Sources
Freezing point blackbody sources provide fixed point primary temperature calibration standards, equal in precision to national standards. As such, they can be used to determine the accuracy of infrared thermometer standards, which are used in turn to calibrate variable temperature, wide aperture blackbody sources. These variable temperature blackbody sources are used in the routine calibration of infrared thermometers applied to process and research measurements. It is through this hierachy of traceability that the degree of uncertainty in everyday temperature measurements is determined. The table bleow lists the type and specifications of LumaSense freezing point blackbody sources.

Model Melt Material Freeze Temperature
M380-CU Copper 1084.65° C
M380-AU Gold 1064.18° C
M380-AG Silver 961.78° C
M380-AL Aluminum 660.32° C
M380-ZN Zinc 419.53° C
M380-SN Tin 231.93° C
M380-SB Indium 156.60° C
M380-GA Gallium 29.76° C

* assigned value of ITS 90

Cavity aperture diameter 6.0mm
Aperture Solid Angle 15°
Emissivity 0.999 ±0.0005
Uncertainty at Freezing Point 0.2° C
Freeze Point Plateau Duration 5 to 7 minutes

Secondary Calibration Sources
In addition to the primary calibration sources for infrared temperature measuring equipment, the LumaSense calibration laboratory is comprehensively equipped with a line of secondary blackbody sources, as follows:

Model Temperature Range Source Aperture Diameter
M340 -20 to 10° C 51mm
M340X  -10 to 100° C 200mm x 200mm
M300  100 to 1200° C 51mm
M330  300 to 1700° C 25mm
M370 800 to 2300° C 3mm wide tungsten strip
M390 600 to 3000° C 16mm

Transfer Standards
LumaSense can also supply customers with transfer standards which allow users to verify calibration at their own location. Transfer standards consist of special IMPAC IS/IGA 12-TSP infrared temperature measuring instruments which are accurately calibrated against the primary blackbody source and are contained in a specially designed case. These instruments are to be used only for calibration purposes, and should be returned to LumaSense for checking at 12-month intervals.

Fully Documented Calibration History
Instruments calibrated by LumaSense receive a full disclosure computer printout of test results after each calibration. In addition, a calibration history for each instrument is retained by LumaSense for reference purposes.
